Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks should be stored in a different building or complex so as to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a secure enclosure which can only be accessible by authorized employees. It is very vital for the safety of the operator, as well as everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This task can use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods could be utilized. It is also important to have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Furthermore, anybody who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also must be trained to operate the fire extinguisher safely and effectively. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a lift truck should be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom part as well as hands-on training. When completing the training session, the person must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the proper method of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also involves site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
There should be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center situated within the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals that are utilized on site. This will also cover the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all personnel at all times. If any exposure incident happens for example, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not sure if medical treatment is considered necessary, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you really believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
